How to Commission a Pet Portrait and other frequently asked questions

I thought I'd collate all my information and frequently asked questions about commissioning a pet portrait by me in one place

WHAT SIZE SHOULD I GET?

This depends somewhat on your budget, the standard is my most popular size, either A4 (to fit a standard A4 frame) or a 20cm x 20cm square (to fit a 10 x 10 inch frame)

This size works well not just for a wall but also for a shelf or a desk, it's a bit more mobile.

My large size is A3 and will fit a standard A3 frame, this can also accommodate more than one pet

For anything larger please get in touch to discuss your requirement

DOES IT COME FRAMED?

No, framing is available on request and I can include it as an option if you’d like it, just bear in mind that there will be an additional charge for the frame and for postage and packaging

IS POSTAGE INCLUDED?

Yes, for all UK postal addresses, your order will come cello wrapped in sturdy packaging via Royal Mail special delivery or courier

Additional postage and packaging will be quoted for any framed paintings, at the time of ordering.

WHAT PHOTO SHOULD I USE?

I usually recommend using a favourite photograph, one that represents to you the true character of your pet.

A high-quality head and shoulders photograph where you can clearly see the eyes is ideal. If you would like me to use a professionally taken photograph, please let me know. I will need permission from the photographer to use their picture as a reference.

If you can avoid using photographs with a filter applied that would be helpful. I once had a photo of blue/black dog sent to me that was brown in real life!

And, if you’re not sure, feel free to send a selection and let me choose for you.

I say the better quality the photograph, the better the painting, but I have been known to work with faded and curled photographs from the seventies of past loved but not forgotten pets. In these instances, I apply a huge dollop of artistic license, I draw on my experience of having painted 100’s of portraits, but there is an element of risk to this. If you’re game, then so am I 😊

WHAT IF I DON'T LIKE THE FINISHED PAINTING?

Well this hasn’t happened to me yet, but I think it’s worth talking about. Hopefully, from this website, you’ve seen enough examples of my work to know roughly what to expect.

My style is not photo realist, it’s more character expression, but if something isn’t quite right I’ll make small changes until it is, so don’t be afraid to speak up and let me know if a colour is wrong or the look in their eye isn’t quite right and I’ll happily work on it (within reason) until you are happy with it.

Once you’ve accepted the painting and paid for it I am unable to exchange or refund your order.

Having received a painting from me and if you want a further adjustment made later I am happy to do so but note that you will be responsible for all the postage costs getting the painting to me and back to yourself again.

DO I NEED TO PAY A DEPOSIT?

No, I’ll be honest, it’s additional administration for me and it cuts into my painting time. I like to trust people, although I was a little too trusting when I first started out and I had one customer who didn’t pay me!

So I now ask for full payment before I send the final painting to you. Some customers have asked to pay over 2-3 months and I can certainly provide a payment plan option if you would like one.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

I only work on commissions 2-3 times a year, so my waiting list is generally 3 months, the painting itself will take several hours over the course of a week, I don’t paint the entire painting in one go, I use layers of watercolour and I like to step back, let the paint dry and review the painting regularly.

If you need the painting for a specific date, let me know at the time of contacting me and if you’re looking to get one as a Christmas present I’d recommend contacting me as early as April.

KIND WORDS:

Oh how I love Jo's work!

I am lucky enough to have portraits by Jo of both my beloved dogs. She has such an unique and quirky style. I absolutely love her work.
My cats next!
She also does a huge amount for animal charities and was kind enough to judge a virtual dog show for me.

Karen L.

Fantastic pet portraits!!

Jo Scott is an amazingly talented artist. She has done three pet portraits for me and all of them have been more beautiful than I could have imagined! She really captured the personalities of each of my pooches. I can not thank her enough. I'm addicted!

Tina M.

Amazing talented lady

I have used Jo to commission 2 portraits. The first one we bought of 3 cats for a friends Christmas present which I might add made her cry when she unwrapped it as it was just captured her cats so well. The second one we paid to get our last rescue dog done as Jo had already done our other two. We'd highly recommend Jo, I just love her work and if I could I'd just keep buying her stuff...

 Gifted and Versatile Artist

Jo has done several paintings for me. She has that rare gift of painting your pet with a realism that makes for a truly emotional experience on viewing it. When you receive one of her paintings it will bring joy to your heart. Her approachable, helpful and accommodating nature makes it easy to discuss your commission requirements with her.

Perfect!

Having come across Jo by her cards through Thortful, i was really pleased to learn she did private commissions.
From initial inquiry to delivery Jo was warm and helpful at every stage. She captured Hugo not just in his physical appearance but his character also. My wife was thrilled with the finished product and everyone who has seen it thinks it is beautiful.
A big thank you to Jo and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

“I got recommended to Jo by a mutual friend, after showing me some of her previous work. I was looking for two pictures of a friend's Poodle's for their birthday, so spent several visits to my friend trying frantically to photograph the lovely doggies, who of course wouldn't sit still. Jo was great and was able to give me instructions as to the type of image that would work well for her to paint. Once she had these, it only took her a week to have the portraits painted and an email with snaps of them so I could see. Marvellous! So exciting to see the photos transformed in Jo's fabulous style. The original  portraits arrived the next day, well presented in mounts and cellophane ready to gift wrap to my friend. I couldn't fault any part of the process, communication and the end result was just gorgeous!!”

“A friend introduced me to Jo's work and I could immediately see that she captured the character of the animals she painted perfectly. I commissioned her to paint one of my dogs for my birthday present and we worked together to get the style, colour palette and the character of my dog just right. It is the most perfect and wonderful gift to me, EVER. I smile every time I look at her on the wall, and love it! It is a great gift for anyone who has ever had a pet, and from cards to commissions, Jo works really hard to make sure that everything she does is just perfect. A great find! ”
